Young cyclists ruled the Metro’s roads in Alaska Cycle Philippines 2014

PRESS RELEASE

Alaska has teamed up with Cycle Asia, a network of premier cycling events and Sunrise Events to launch the Alaska Cycle Philippines where Filipino riders geared up for three days of thrilling bike action last May 16 to 18 at BGC. Over 1500 cycling enthusiasts joined the event which featured exciting and challenging categories for children, adults and families.

The event was graced by Chris Robb, managing director of Spectrum Worldwide and owner of Cycle Asia, catered to cyclists of all ages and abilities with different race categories.

Categories include Tricycle Ride which is specially designed for young kids between ages 2 and 5, the Junior Challenge which is a more challenging category designed for older children where they have to ride as fast as they can within 30 minutes and then there’s the Foldies Community Ride which is catered to the popular folding bikes cycling community. The Alaska Cycle Philippines was a “Bike Ride Out”, meaning there were no winners just plain fun to promote participation and most especially good health and an active lifestyle.

"We are excited to continue an active year of Alaska Sports with the launch of the three events Alaska Cycle Philippines, Alaska IronKids Philippines Aquathlon and the Alaska World Milk Day Family run. Alaska teamed up with international partners to ensure that Filipino families participate in sports activities as exercise to promote their health and ensure a wholesome lifestyle," said Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, President/CEO of Alaska Milk Corporation.

The 7th National Nutrition Survey, done by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute and the Department of Health, showed that obesity is increasing with nearly two out 10 children considered as overweight. Under-nutrition is also a public health concern affecting nearly three out 10 children.  Alaska promotes nutrition through its leading brands, Alaska Powdered Milk Drink and Alaska Chocolate Powdered Milk Drink and through educating the public about the importance of drinking milk and keeping an active and healthy lifestyle.

Alaska promotes a holistic sports development program for the whole family and encourages a healthy and active lifestyle through biking, swimming and running. It also helps in community development and nation building by nurturing positive values of teamwork, cooperation and fair play through sports activities like the Alaska Cycle Philippines, Alaska IronKids Aquathlon and the World Milk Day Family Run.

Alaska Iron Kids Aquathlon 2014!

Last February 9, I was invited to cover the Alaska Iron Kids Aquathlon held at The Village Sports Club in Paranaque City. The event is open to children from 6 to 14 years old that features two sporting events, swimming and running. The aquathlon event offered two categories, (1) the RACE category is for competitive kids who will complete to place and beat their personal record and (2) the PLAY category is for kids who were given a chance to experience the event without the pressure of the competition.
male aquathletes!
female aquathletes!

Kira Ellis, top finisher 6-8 yrs old category

Tara Borlain (center), top finisher 9-10 yrs old category and Samantha Borlain (rightmost), top finisher 11-12 yrs old category

Sophia Almendral, 2nd placer 11-12 yrs old category
Gabby Ong, 2nd placer 6-8 yrs old category
I am inspired and amazed on how these kids enjoyed and finished the race. This event help kids develop the values of discipline, hardwork and determination to complete the race. This is also the perfect venue for family bonding and for parents to show great coaching and support for the kids.

Thoughts while observing/watching the aquathlon event:
1. Safe Event - lot of marshalls/lifeguard deployed all over the event place.
2. Distances are achievable.
    6 to 8 yrs (100m swim, 1km run)
    9 to 10 yrs (200m swim, 1.5 km run)
    11 to 12 yrs (300m swim, 2km run)
    13 to 14 yrs (400m, 3km run)
3. The Village Sports Club is indeed a kid friendly venue.
4. Kids only race. Accidents is minimize since there is no older competitor.
5. Race route/information were clearly discussed before each category. Encouraging kids to ask questions about their category.
6. On time gunstart for all categories.

The Bloggers!
Kudos to Sunrise Events and Alaska Milk Corporation for staging this aquathlon event!
Congratulations to all participants and parents for their dedication and efforts for life-long passion for fitness and healthy lifestyle!

Athletes on Their Mark for the Safeguard Active 5i50 Triathlon

Official Press Release

MANILA, Philippines – Athletes know the importance of maintaining a proper regimen to enhance performance. They rely on state-of-the-art gear that delivers speed, proper nutrition that guarantees endurance, and a training program that increases their strength. But when it comes to hygiene, one important aspect is often overlooked: the skin, which is actually our first line of defense when it comes to germs.

There’s no body part quite as tortured as the human skin. Every day, it has to endure all the visible and microscopic dirt and grime from all the different elements around us. But it’s the triathletes who put their skins through the most abuse: as they splash, pedal, and stride, they expose their skins to a harsh mix of sun, chlorine or salt water, and dirt. These, along with excessive sweat and friction from gear, can take its toll on the skin – and it can lead to skin diseases and illness.

This October 6, Safeguard will gather local and international pros as well as age-groupers for the first ever Safeguard Active 5i50 Triathlon – a world-class and intimate race that will surely put those skins to the test. The course takes place in Subic, which promises a challenging yet controlled environment for both experts and beginners. The event will be composed of a 1.5KM swim at Kamana Resort [Swim Venue], a 40KM bike course along the rolling hills of Subic [Bike Venue], and will culminate with a 10KM run at a new route along the shady forest [Run Venue]. The entire course is set against the backdrop of Subic Bay’s breathtaking scenery, which promises a unique race for participants and an exclusive enjoyable experience for their families who will come to support.

In partnership with Sunrise Events, Inc., the agency behind the highly successful Ironman 70.3 and Iron Kids, this leg is part of the 5150 triathlon series, the world’s largest international Olympic race series in the world. It is also the first non-drafting international race series of its kind, offering a competitive platform for professional and age group athletes.

Safeguard keeps up with those who love the game by leveling up to their demands. The brand has been keeping family skin healthy for more than 75 years, using a mix of unbeatable germ protection and fresh, cleansing elements to care for Filipino skin. It has been every household’s partner for preventing disease and pursuing an active, worry-free life. For the 5150 race, Safeguard aims to showcase its new line Safeguard Active, a product specifically targeted for athletes’ extreme needs.

Safeguard Active boasts of a higher level of anti-bacterial ingredient, which inhibits the growth and re-growth of odor-causing germs for hours. It comes in both soap and body wash form, and its fresh scent can last all day and withstand both sweat and water. It’s the perfect protection booster for the body’s first line of defense.

For battle-tested athletes who aim to beat their personal records, the Safeguard Active 5150 Triathlon is a perfect chance to bring the 2013 race season to an iconic finish. Meanwhile, neophyte racers will be thrilled to participate in their first Olympic-level distance triathlon event.

It’s a day that promises exhilarating challenges for the adrenaline-hungry, coupled with unbeatable Safeguard protection to ensure a fresh, unhampered finish. No matter what kind of athlete you are, it’s time to get your skin in the game.
