Young cyclists ruled the Metro’s roads in Alaska Cycle Philippines 2014

PRESS RELEASE

Alaska has teamed up with Cycle Asia, a network of premier cycling events and Sunrise Events to launch the Alaska Cycle Philippines where Filipino riders geared up for three days of thrilling bike action last May 16 to 18 at BGC. Over 1500 cycling enthusiasts joined the event which featured exciting and challenging categories for children, adults and families.

The event was graced by Chris Robb, managing director of Spectrum Worldwide and owner of Cycle Asia, catered to cyclists of all ages and abilities with different race categories.

Categories include Tricycle Ride which is specially designed for young kids between ages 2 and 5, the Junior Challenge which is a more challenging category designed for older children where they have to ride as fast as they can within 30 minutes and then there’s the Foldies Community Ride which is catered to the popular folding bikes cycling community. The Alaska Cycle Philippines was a “Bike Ride Out”, meaning there were no winners just plain fun to promote participation and most especially good health and an active lifestyle.

"We are excited to continue an active year of Alaska Sports with the launch of the three events Alaska Cycle Philippines, Alaska IronKids Philippines Aquathlon and the Alaska World Milk Day Family run. Alaska teamed up with international partners to ensure that Filipino families participate in sports activities as exercise to promote their health and ensure a wholesome lifestyle," said Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, President/CEO of Alaska Milk Corporation.

The 7th National Nutrition Survey, done by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute and the Department of Health, showed that obesity is increasing with nearly two out 10 children considered as overweight. Under-nutrition is also a public health concern affecting nearly three out 10 children.  Alaska promotes nutrition through its leading brands, Alaska Powdered Milk Drink and Alaska Chocolate Powdered Milk Drink and through educating the public about the importance of drinking milk and keeping an active and healthy lifestyle.

Alaska promotes a holistic sports development program for the whole family and encourages a healthy and active lifestyle through biking, swimming and running. It also helps in community development and nation building by nurturing positive values of teamwork, cooperation and fair play through sports activities like the Alaska Cycle Philippines, Alaska IronKids Aquathlon and the World Milk Day Family Run.

ALASKA CELEBRATES FIRST EVER WORLD MILK DAY IN THE PHILIPPINES

PRESS RELEASE
ALASKA CELEBRATES FIRST EVER WORLD MILK DAY IN THE PHILIPPINES

June 1 is World Milk Day!  As the leading milk company in the Philippines that provides Filipino families superior and affordable nutrition, Alaska Milk Corporation spearheads the first ever celebration of World Milk Day in the country.

The Alaska World Milk Day provides a great opportunity to reinforce importance of drinking milk and healthy lifestyle and bring it at the forefront of consumer awareness. And with the series of exciting activities lined up for the World Milk Day, Alaska Milk encourages children and adults alike to get into the habit of drinking milk and engage into sports activities to achieve optimum health.

Allow us to share with you some alarming health problems.  Nutrition disorders such as malnutrition and obesity are particularly rampant with children. They interfere with the child’s growth and development which could lead to serious health problems. Based on a 2008 survey of the World Health Organization (WHO), more than one in ten adults are obese. Obesity and being overweight are the fifth leading risk for global deaths. And what is alarming is that even children are experiencing overweight issues as nearly 43 million children are overweight based 2010 WHO data.

In another study conducted by the  Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), a survey was initially conducted among Pre-school children, adolescents, adults, pregnant and lactating mothers. The objectives were to assess the nutritional status of 0-10 years old children, 11-19 years olds, pregnant and lactating women, and other adults 20 years and over using anthropometric indicators of growth and to compare results from previous surveys.  Again, results show that there is a problem on malnutrition which is a condition resulting from lack of or excess of one or more essential nutrients.

Common nutritional problems of Filipino children include protein-energy malnutrition, iron deficiency anemia, vitamin A deficiency disorders and iodine deficiency disorders. Side by side with these forms of undernutrition is overnutrition.

So how can we assure that our children are well-nourished?  One must never skip breakfast and a good breakfast is one that provides about 1/3 of the total energy and nutrient requirements of the child. Children should be encouraged to drink milk with a well-balanced breakfast combined with physical activities like walking, running, dancing, swimming, housework and sports in and out of school.

June 2013 marks the milestone of the first-ever Alaska World Milk Day.  Various exciting activities were lined-up to celebrate and promote good health!  The celebration kicked off last  June 1 with the Alaska IronKids Run Race in SM Mall Of Asia (IMAX Parking Area) and the Alaska World Milk Day Sampling in Glorietta Malls.  June 9 witnessed Alaska World Milk Day Family Run where more than 3,000 participants raced at 3k, 5k, 10k.  As early as 4am, families gathered at the Bonifacio Global City in preparation for the run.  Families ran and crossed the finish line together making the event a great family bonding opportunity!  Aside from the race, children also had fun in the booths and activity area such as the inflatable, trampoline and joust. The 10k category proved to be more challenging as the race course included the Buendia flyover.More than 3,000 participated in the fun run which translated to a donation of more than 3,000 packs of Alaska Powdered Milk Drink to the Children’s Hour which was represented by Ms. Mikki Montenegro, Marketing and Communications Associate of Children’s Hour.  As in previous events, there was also the Alaska milk moustache photo shoot where everyone eagerly participated in.

The success of the Alaska World Milk Day celebrations were made possible  with the support of Ayala Malls, Solar Sports, Basketball TV, Solar News, Akari nxled, Glorietta, Gatorade, Downy, BGC, Walter Bread, and Maynilad and Children’s Hour as the beneficiary.

Alaska World Milk Day Run Rocks!

After my not so good performance at 32k Run United 2013, clocked 3:56 from my previous personal best of 3:14 (Run United 3 2012), I have second thoughts on running my 10km race at Alaska Run. Eventually, Noel convinced me to run since this will be my recovery run after my 32k finish a week before. Arrived at the venue around 4:30am, I am not sure if I would perform well on this run because I spent most of my Saturday at the gym (attended Body Step class and lift weights). My first four kilometers was good until I suffered side crampie (side stitch) that slow me down before approaching Kalayaan flyover. Pain subsides on the 8th kilometer, that's the time I was able to recover my pace. Official time for the 10km run is 52:11.

Thoughts on the race:
  1. On-time gunstart.
  2. New and challenging 10k route.
  3. Ice cold water provided on hydration stations.
  4. Kilometer markers are visible on the route.
  5. Weather is good...not too humid :)
  6. Plenty of race marshalls along the route.
  7. Activity village is well organized.
  8. Raffle for runners who joined the race.
  9. Lots of race photographers!
  10. Loot Bag full of Alaska products!

Overall the race is very well organized. I had fun! Big thanks and congratulations to Alaska, Eventking and Sunrise for a good 10km run!

Alaska World Milk Day Run on June 9, 2013

World Milk Day is celebrated on the 1st of June. The first World Milk Day was held in 2001. FAO (the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) proposed this specific day to focus attention on milk and to publicise activities connected with milk and the milk industry.

The date of 1st June was chosen by FAO because a number of countries were already celebrating a national milk day on or around this time. Since the first World Milk Day was held in 2001, many countries spread throughout the world have participated in the celebrations and the number is growing each year. The fact that many countries choose to do this on the same day lends additional importance to individual national celebrations and shows that milk is a global food.

In line with this, Alaska Milk Corporation joins in the celebration of World Milk Day by organizing the first ever Alaska World Milk Day. One of the activity that they are staging is the Alaska World Milk Day Run. Please read on the details below.
