BGC CYCLE PHILIPPINES SHIFTS TO HIGH GEAR

PRESS RELEASE

MANILA, PHILIPPINES 16 November 2013 – BGC Cycle Philippines hits the road on 15-17 November inside Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City, with more than 2,000 cyclists ready for three days of thrilling action and activities in the tradition of highly successful Cycle Asia events staged across the region.

The event, put up by title sponsor BGC and organized by Sunrise Events, Inc., is the latest addition to the 2013 Cycle Asia calendar. Cycle Asia is the network of premier cycling events that offers riders the rare opportunity to ride in major Asian cities.

"Cycling continues to enjoy strong growth in the Philippines and we are naturally thrilled to introduce the event at Bonifacio Global City," said Manny Blas II, head of Commercial Operations, Fort Bonifacio Development Corp.

To guarantee safety among participants and ensure the smooth staging of the event, organizers will keep the routes partially closed.

The novel event, featuring cyclists of all ages and abilities, will have participants test their skills in The Tricycle Ride, The Kids’ Ride, The Community Ride (20km and 40km) and The Challenge (40km) capped by the “Ride with Australian Robbie McEwen.” All kids’ ride will be on 16 November while the mass participation rides will be held on 17 November.

McEwen, who also serves as the Cycle Asia ambassador, is a three-time Tour de France winner in the sprint category and considered as the fastest sprinter in the world at his peak. A former Australian BMX champion, McEwen switched to road racing in 1990 at age 18 and raced as a pro from 1996 to 2012. He last rode for Orica-GreenEDGE on the UCI World Tour after competing in the 2012 Tour of California.

“SEI’s goal is to stage world class events and promote a healthy lifestyle among families. We have seen the growth of triathlon and running and we see cycling to be moving in the same direction,” said Wilfred Uytengsu, president of SEI, which also organizes the annual Ironman Philippines, Xterra and IronKids events. “On its debut, the event attracted 2,100 cyclists of all ages. It will be one great weekend of cycling fun.”

A Cycling & Lifestyle Expo has also been lined up for this weekend’s cycling festival to keep the entire family entertained over three days.

"While the unique venue will certainly offer local cyclists a fantastic riding experience, we also look forward to hosting visitors from around the region as they enjoy the unique thrill of participating in the very first BGC Cycle Philippines,” said Blas.

Aside from the cycling action during BGC Cycle Philippines, Bonifacio Global City also offers a huge range of activities for tourists to take advantage of during their stay. The district is well known for its open-air lifestyle retail and dining concept and public art program, as well as a world-class science museum and parks.

Owned and organized by Spectrum Worldwide, Cycle Asia has already staged two hugely successful events in 2013 – OCBC Cycle Malaysia and OCBC Cycle Singapore, which attracted over 5,000 and 11,500 participants, respectively. The Gold Coast Festival of Cycling was also held last September.

“We are delighted to be expanding Cycle Asia to the Philippines and we look forward to working alongside Sunrise Events who have built an outstanding reputation for delivering first-class sporting events,” said Chris Robb, Managing Director, Spectrum Worldwide.

Other backers of the event, also held for the benefit of the Firefly Brigade, are F2P, Felt Bicycles, Garmin, Gatorade, Intercare, Lexus, Manila Water, The Philippine Star, Red Garlic, Rudy Project, Seda, Walter Bread and MMDA.

Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2013: Most Challenging Race to Date!

Official Press Release

Men's Health Urbanathlon 2013: Most Challenging Race to Date!

The country’s first obstacle laden course is back, and this time, with bigger and more challenging obstacles! Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2013 saw around 3,000 participants who took on the challenge and conquered Men’s Health Philippines’ toughest race. This unique event combines the rigors of a run with the tough nature of traversing numerous obstacles in an urban setting.

“We always want to take things a step further. And the 2013 Men’s Health Urbanathlon is a prime example. We have new obstacles and have improved the classic ones,” says Men’s Health Philippines editor-in-chief Peejo Pilar.

Now on its 7th year, Men’s Health Urbanathlon challenged Urbanathletes with its staples such as the scaffolding maze, the 8x40 container van, and “The Wall”, wherein you need all your upper and lower body strength to conquer this 8-foot beast; as well as, with the new obstacles this year, “The Network” a net challenge going over a bus and “The Tower”, a 12-foot high rope climb to the bell on top.

The SM Mall of Asia Grounds turned into a race venue and fitness camp combined as Urbanathletes aimed to conquer every challenge along the way and make it to the finish line.

“We hope that first-timers and hardcore runners enjoyed this year’s Men’s Health Urbanathlon. And of course, we’re excited to learn, upgrade, and make the 2014 Men’s Health Urbanathlon even bigger and better!,” exclaims Peejo.

The Men’s Health Urbanathlon and Festival is co-presented by Century Tuna, Gatorade, Bo Athletics, with major sponsors Bridgestone, Emperador Light, and Schick, with minor sponsors Havaianas, The Athlete’s Foot, Nivea Men, and special thanks to Merrell.

Men’s Heath Philippines features Joseph Marco on its October issue cover, which is available in all leading bookstores and newsstands nationwide. You can also like Men’s Health Philippines on Facebook via www.facebook.com/menshealthphilippines, or follow us on Twitter at @menshealthph. Road to Run United Philippine Marathon (RUPM) DOS!

Flashback...
This Sunday, October 6, I'll be running my fourth 42km at the second Run United Philippine Marathon. Eventhough this is not my first marathon, I still feel excited, nervous and a bit apprehensive. I believe this is normal for runners participating in full marathon (42km). My target is to beat my RUPM record last year. I'd like to share my final preparations two weeks before the race.

Group Exercises (Body Step / Body Attack / Body Combat)
I regularly attend group classes whenever I don't have time to run outdoor. It improves my strength through core conditioning, squats and lunges. It also increase my heart and lung capacity through a full body cardio workout.

Yoga (Hot Flow / Core Flow)
I also attend yoga twice a week to loosen up lower back and thighs, ankle stability, calves and tight hamstrings. It also bring focus and quiet my mind that I need on race day.

Cardiovascular Machines
Steppers to strengthen my lower body
Fuel
On my three marathons I mentioned above, I always experienced "hitting the wall." Also called "bonk" is a condition caused by the depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles. Sudden fatigue, exhaustion, muscle cramping and loss of energy are the manifestation of this condition. This can be avoided by ensuring/maintaining that glycogen levels are high during physical activity by eating/drinking carbs-rich substances. Last September 26, I was lucky to be invited by Unilab Active Health (ULAH) to try the new product that helps endurance athletes during training or race.

Active Health Sports Gel
The Active Health Sports Gel is a source of lasting energy. It contains maltodextrin (the most easily digested form of carbohydrate) which contains 60% carbs. It has electrolytes that replenish the sodium and pottassium lost through sweat. It is handy since it comes in a small, single-serve packet that has a strip at the top that can be peeled off to reveal an opening through which the gel can be consumed.

The Active Health Sports Gel is worth a try for runners, I didn't experienced an upset stomach after gel consumption on one of my long runs. Available on Berry Mix flavor which is delicious and it's not a challenge to ingest. Passed my criteria for flavor, texture and stomach acceptance. Each 43g sachet contains 29g of carbohydrates (116kcal) and amounts to about one mouthful. As with most energy gels, the price of the gel would be a parity (equivalence in value) with the existing gels at the market. Overall, the new product is a good source of increased energy, avoid the dangers of dehydration since is replenish electrolytes lost, compact rich carb source, easy to eat and very handy and portable.
trying out the gel
Good news to all RUPM runners!!! Active Health Sports Gel will be launched on race day (October 6).  I recommend you to try the new product of ULAH for your upcoming trainings and runs for maximum PR performance.

Relax and Extra Sleep
The best thing to do now on the final week is to relax and to chill. RUPM runners do your best, don't quit and be proud knowing that running a marathon is difficult!

See you on Sunday! :)
